Alfonso Communications Inc. is a locally owned, MBE/DBE/SBE certified firm. Our primary focus is on public relations, government affairs, and community outreach. Clients include both the public and private sectors and frequently involve infrastructure projects related to water, transportation, wastewater, environment, transit, community redevelopment initiatives, and public-private (P-3) partnerships.
Darren Alfonso is a native of Tampa, Florida. He attended Chamberlain High School and is a graduate of the University of South Florida. Prior to moving in to the private sector, Darren was a 3rd generation public servant, proudly following in the footsteps of many of his family members who dedicated their careers to Hillsborough County, the State of Florida, and the federal government. Both of Darren’s grandmothers worked in the cigar factories of historic Ybor City for 30 years.
Darren is a seasoned communicator with 30 years of experience in community, government, and media relations. Over the course of a 20 year career in public service, Darren served as a liaison between multiple government agencies and communities, and was responsible for the implementation and management of numerous government programs. For the past decade, he has served as a public relations consultant providing community outreach on more than 40 infrastructure projects for various municipalities throughout Florida and maintains an outstanding reputation for the work he has performed. He has successfully partnered with numerous agencies and affected communities to overcome some of the most challenging public issues and concerns on several of the highest profile projects and campaigns in the state.

Northwest Hillsborough Wastewater Consolidation Project, Hillsborough County, Florida
Business Development / Public Outreach
Provided public outreach support for the initial planning phase in what would ultimately become five separate projects budgeted at approximately $235 million dollars combined.
Dale Mabry Wastewater Diversion Pipelines Project
Public Relations / Outreach
Developed an extensive stakeholder database and personally met with multiple stakeholders. Established relationships with individuals identified as leaders within their communities and organizations. Developed a comprehensive outreach and internal communications plan and also updated the PowerPoint presentation for the project’s public meeting. Worked collaboratively with County staff to coordinate and facilitate the project’s public meeting which was attended by over 100 members of the community.
Northwest Expansion Design Criteria Project

Met personally with multiple stakeholders who live within the vicinity of the plant and who would be directly affected by its expansion. Developed criteria protocol for public outreach section of procurement phase.
Dale Mabry Diversion – Phase II / Brushy Creek Pump Station Rehabilitation
Business Development / Outreach
Met personally with multiple stakeholders including the Friends of Northwest Regional Park. Utilized established relationships and intimate knowledge of the community’s wishes and concerns to develop an outreach plan consistent with the County’s processes. These efforts assisted the design-build team in winning the contract.
I-75 / University Parkway Diverging Diamond Project, Sarasota County, Florida
Business Development / Public Information
This $74.5 million dollar design-build project is the first of its kind in Florida and will be the largest in the country upon its completion. Responsible for securing strategic partnerships with all civil engineering teams pursuing the project. Upon the project being awarded, worked collaboratively with FDOT and project staff to coordinate project’s public meeting which was attended by over 250 stakeholders and the media.
I-4 Ultimate Project, Orange and Seminole County, Florida
Public Involvement / Noise & Vibration Study
Supported this $2.1 billion dollar project during the public involvement phase. Coordinated six public meetings related to noise walls within a three week period. Worked collaboratively with the Florida Department of Transportation in the coordination and facilitation of the mandated Industry Forum, DBE/SBE workshops, and numerous other special interest groups’ meetings.
ADDITIONAL PROJECT EXPERIENCE
Provided public relations on the following projects. Responsibilities involved assessing areas being impacted and developing project specific outreach plans that encouraged two-way dialogue between citizens and the government agencies that served them. Identified leaders among stakeholders and cultivated strategic partnerships within affected communities to ensure the most efficient and comprehensive information delivery processes were in place. Additional responsibilities also included coordinating and facilitating public meetings, issuing press releases and other advisories, and creating collateral material and website content.
